Surfing a Big Wave

Local Surf Spots

Before You Paddle Out

The surf community around Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit is friendly and welcoming, but it runs on respect. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Respect locals — many of these breaks are home to surfers who have been riding them for years.

  • Take turns — wait for your wave and avoid dropping in on someone else.

  • Know your limits — each spot changes with tide and swell, so take a few minutes to watch before paddling out.

  • Keep it clean — leave the beach better than you found it.

Now let’s check out the best waves around Vallarta

Charlie Surfing La Lancha

01

La Lancha (Punta de Mita)

02

Sayulita

Level: Beginner to Longboarder
Best months: December to March
Sayulita’s main break is mellow, with soft rolling rights and lefts that peel over a sand and rock bottom. Ideal for longboarding and small-wave fun. The lively town atmosphere, beach cafés, and local surf vibe make it a must-visit spot.

03

Punta Burros

Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Best months: May to October
A reliable reef break that offers both rights and lefts with plenty of power. Punta Burros is consistent throughout the summer season, and when the swell hits, it delivers long, fast rides with clean faces.

04

San Pancho

Level: Advanced
Best months: June to October
San Pancho has stronger waves and heavier peaks, perfect for experienced surfers. It can close out on smaller days but turns into a powerful and rewarding beach break when the swell builds. The town vibe is relaxed and the sunsets are unreal.
